Banana festival from Aug 4

As a part of promotion of horticulture products in the country, the Union agriculture ministry is arranging a three-day Banana Festival and Conference from from August 4, 2005, at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. The event will be inaugurated by the Union agriculture minister, Sharad Pawar.

India, with its rich bio-diversity of banana and plantain, is the largest producer and consumer in the world with estimated annual production of 16 million tonne of bananas. Indias domestic production alone exceeds the entire world trade.

It contributes more than 2.8% to GDP of agriculture in India and provides livelihood and security to millions in primary production, trade and processing. But, only 13% of banana production in the world is exported.
