Against the grain of conventional wisdom that more ministerial berths mean added stability, the Congress leadership has decided to prune the size of the cabinet in J&K when its nominee Ghulam Nabi Azad takes over on November 2.

Mr Azad, who was elected leader of the CLP in Srinagar, told reporters later there that his council of ministers would be small and compact.
