Audi takes over VWs Belgian plant to make A1

Audi AG, Volkswagen AGs luxury division, took control of the namesake brands Brussels factory on Wednesday to add capacity for building the new A1 small car.

Together we have found the best solution for Brussels, Martin Winterkorn, Volkswagen CEO and former Audi leader, said at an event at the factory to mark the handover. We are putting the plant into good and safe hands.

Ingolstadt, Germany-based Audi needs to increase capacity to meet a goal of selling 1.5 million vehicles in 2015.

The carmaker, which competes with Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW) AG and DaimlerChrysler AGs Mercedes-Benz, plans to add 18 new models by 2015, nearly doubling its lineup to 40 vehicles.
