Basically, the new Asus Fonepad is a 7-inch Android tablet with full voice telephony, a faster processor and a better camera, among other things.

At Rs 17,499, the Fonepad 7 is an affordable device with a 7-inch 1,280 x 800-pixel LED screen and 1.6 GHz Intel Atom dual-core processor. The screen is a definite advantage since it has wider viewing angles making for a much more pleasant viewing.

Out of the box, the Asus Fonepad 7 measures just 10.5 mm thick and has a low 340 grams weight. It is highly portable and perfect for entertainment on the go. A new smudge-resistant coating helps keeps fingerprints at bay on the 7-inch screen display and Miracast wireless video streaming mirrors the display to compatible high definition televisions for big-screen entertainment.

This updated version of the popular Fonepad features a new non-slip finish and faster HSPA+ 3G with upto 42 Mbit/s download speeds. As mentioned above, it is powered by an Intel processor with hyper-threading technology for seamless multitasking performance with Android 4.2 operating system. The 7-inch display has a crisp resolution with IPS (in-plane switching) technology for wide viewing angles and excellent daylight visibility, while dual-front speakers with Asus SonicMaster audio technology ensure high-quality sound.

The Asus Fonepad 7 has a customised user interface that integrates social media information, with users being able to see their friends latest social media updates on their contact list or incoming call notifications. It is an always-connected device for seamless web browsing. With full 3G telephony support across GSM and WCDMA bands, the Fonepad 7 can also be used for voice calls using the built-in noise-cancelling digital microphone or an optimal Bluetooth headset.

The Asus Fonepad 7 features a 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera, plus a 5-megapixel auto-focus rear camera with a 100 continuous-shot burst mode and 1080p full HD video recording. The 3950mAh battery provides upto 28 hours of 3G talk time; 35 days of standby time and upto 10 hours of video playback. This tablet-cum-phone is available with 16 GB storage and a microSDHC card slot, conveniently located on the side of the case; it can be used to add more.

In my usage, the Asus Fonepad 7 came off as a perfectly decent 7-inch tablet. This new Asus device seems to be aimed at budget-conscious shoppers who dont want to buy a separate tablet and a smartphone, and who dont mind holding a huge phone up to their head..
