Driven by the growing demand for more electrical equipment and services, Areva T&D India has completed investment of Rs 950-crore on eight factories in three sites, two at Hosur and Padappai in Tamil Nadu, and another in Vadodara, Gujarat. The plants will be inaugurated this week, including the inauguration of the Padapai plant by chairman and CEO of Areva T&D Philippe Guillemot on Tuesday.

With this substantial investment, we will further reinforce Areva T&D Indias clear leadership in extra high voltage and position ourselves for the future ultra high voltage technology, with full localisation of these offers. A company statement from New Delhi on Monday said, With the expected demand for electricity, under the governments 11th and 12th five year plans an additional 1,61,000 mw of new power generation will be added by 2020 and significant investments made in the electrical grid. With its new factories, Areva will supply substations and equipment at highest voltage levels: 765kv (EHVAC) and 1200kv (UHVAC) and at 800kv for HVDC.to support the countrys growing demand.

The largest of Areva T&Ds new sites (3,50,000 sqm) is based in Vadodara. The site houses four factories, including a power transformer plant with the largest transformer testing capabilities in India. Areva manufactures extra and ultra high voltage (EHV and UHV) power transformers up to 1200 kv AC and 800 kv DC in this factory. Distribution transformers, secondary distribution switchgear and primary distribution switchgear up to 36kV, are also manufactured in Vadodara.

The site at Padappai hosts three new factories, including Indias first gas insulated substation (GIS) production facility. With a covered manufacturing area of 21,400 sqm, the site also hosts a circuit breaker factory and a disconnector factory (both up to 1200kV).

The Hosur (90,000 sqm) site will manufacture condenser bushings and instrument transformers (up to 1200kv). It also houses an instrument transformer competency centre, providing high-level global research and development expertise.

The three sites have UHV capabilities, including a UHV testing laboratory up to 1200kv, the highest AC/DC voltage level design and production facilities, and Basic Impulse Level (BIL) testing facilities, the release said.
