Apollo Tyres will double the capacity of its two plants in Kerala, pumping in Rs 200 crore, according to the companys chairman Onkar S Kanwar.

The company, which had taken over the Premier Tyres unit in 1995 and had lately been considering closing it down, would now raise the daily capacity of the plant from 50 tonne to 100 tonne.

The capacity of Perambra plant in Thrissur district which it started in 1975, would be doubled to 200 tonne.

It was a changed situation in Kerala, Mr Kanwar said, adding that with the initiative of the unions and the support of the government, the company decided to do away with the idea of closing down the Premier plant.

A long-term pact had been signed with the unions, he added.
