A second NDA-appointed Governor has made an exit in less than a week. Bihar governor M Rama Jois resigned on Thursday after an eventful 16-month term that was often marked by frequent stand-offs between him and the Rabri Devi ministry.

Mr Jois faxed his resignation letter to the President with the request that it be accepted with effect from November 1 this year, Raj Bhavan sources said.

The resignation came a few days after senior BJP leader Madan Lal Khurana quit as Rajasthan Governor in a bid to return to active politics.

Bihars ruling RJD had stepped up the demand for the removal of Mr Jois, who took over on June 12, 2003, since the UPA government came to power at the Centre.

The Rabri Devi ministry was at loggerheads with Raj Bhavan on several issues, including appointment of vice-chancellors of different state universities, chairman of the state university (constituent colleges) service commission and recruitment of lecturers into which a vigilance probe was ordered.
