In order to fulfil the shortage of power supply for irrigation purpose, the Andhra Pradesh government is evolving measures to provide seven-hour continous power supply to the farmers. The farmers were suffering due to the shortage of power supply.

The government had urged the farmers to take up dry crop cultivation but the farmers have ignored their suggestion and taken up paddy crop everywhere as it is more profitable, he said.

Speaking to the reporters here on Friday, after his telephonic talk with chief minister, YS Rajasekhara Reddy, he said the former has assured him in this direction. Due to heavy demand, the government was purchasing 400 mw of power from neighbouring states at a high-rate to help the farmers but at the same time the opposition party (TDP) was politicising the issue to gain mileage, he alleged. During the nine-year regime of TDP nothing was being done to improve the power situation in the state.
