Protesting against the Kerala government's proposed move to promote a low alcohol content beverage, the Civil Rights and Environment Protection council today decided to embark on a padayatra from Kasaragode on April 10.

The Council chairman Divakaran Pallath would embark on the One-man padayatra (Journey on Foot), General Convener, Jiju Francis Cheenikkal, told reporters here.

The main objective of the padayatra would be to dissuade the Government from its proposed move to permit sale of 'Breezer' in the State, he said.

The product of the Goa-based Becardi Martini Limited's product-Breezer-with 4.8 per cent alcohol content is popular in Karnataka and other several States, he said.

Cheenikkal claimed that the Indian Union Muslim League, Indian National League, Kerala Madya Nirodhana Samithi, Kerala Madya Vimochana Samithi and several other social organizations have extended their support to the padayatra.

The Padayatra, to be inaugurated by former KPCC chief and Minister, K Muraleedharan would conclude at Thiruvanthapuram on May 25.

A mass dharna would be staged in front of the excise commissioner's office that day in protest against granting permission for sale of low-alcohol content beverage in the state, he added.
