Even as uncertainty over the health of Reliance Industries chairman Dhirubhai Ambani persists, the Reliance group in a press release on Wednesday states that Mr Ambanis condition during the day though critical, has been stable. Mr Ambani continues to receive the highest quality care at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai, the company release added.

A press release issued at 1700 hours was no different from RIL managing director Anil Ambanis morning briefing to the media, where he said: On overall parameters, my fathers health is stable.

According to Vernon DSa, medical director of Breach Candy hospital: Dhirubhai Ambanis health condition continues to be critical even as an electro-encephealogram (EEG) test conducted on him today was favourable. Yet every hour is critical.

Dhirubhai Ambanis health does not seem to have improved much since his admission, Mr Vernon DSa said. Mr Ambanis condition is just the same as yesterday and we are still analysing the situation. A CT-scan was carried out yesterday, he added.

Breach Candy Hospitals CEO Vijay Krishna said Mr Ambanis medical case papers have been sent abroad for an expert opinion. No foreign doctors are coming, but we have sent

Mr Ambanis case papers aboard, Mr Krishna said. He, however, did not specify to which foreign hospital or doctors the papers have been sent to.

Thursday would be a crucial day even as doctors have extended the observation period on Mr Ambanis to 72 hours from 48 hours, after which a conclusion could be arrived at by the doctors. The Reliance chief was admitted to the ICU of Breach Candy on Monday evening after a stroke and has been unconscious ever since that time.

The Ambani family, for the second consecutive day, was hopeful of having their head of the family back in better health. Although Reliance vice-chairman Mukesh Ambani remained at the ICU for most of the time, the younger Ambani was seen outside the hospital entrance with Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijay Singh, who flew down to Mumbai to enquire about the Reliance chiefs health. This is a moment of grief for all of us, Mr Singh said.

President K R Narayanan, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and leader of opposition Sonia Gandhi are also reported to have enquired about the health of the Reliance Group chairman. They are said to have enquired about Mr Ambanis health over telephone with Mr Mukesh Ambani.

Other political leaders who flocked to Breach Candy to wish Mr Ambani a speedy recovery included, Maharashtra state minister for health and family welfare Digvijay Khanvilkar. He is believed to have met Mr Mukesh Ambani at the hospital. He told media persons that the doctors and hospital staff are putting in their best efforts. He added: The nation needs citizens like Dhirubhai.

Nicholas Piramal chairman Ajay Piramal was also with the Ambani family for a long time. Also seen at the hospital were Amitabh Bachchan and Samajwadi party MP Amar Singh. Film star Jackie Shroff also visited the hospital to wish a speedy recovery for Mr Ambani.

The entire Indian corporate world and the bourses have been eager to know about the progress in Reliance chairmans health. Media persons stayed put outside the hospital through out the day to gather developments on Mr Ambanis health, despite a heavy downpour.
