Akhilesh Yadav-led govt launches slew of power projects

The Uttar Pradesh government headed by chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday gifted the state power projects worth Rs 15,784 crore, ranging from commissioning the 330 MW Srinagar Hydro Power project in Uttarakhand, which has been built by the GVK group at a cost of Rs 3,600 crore. It will start providing UP?s share of 88% power from the first week of April.

The government signed agreements for long-term power purchase of 1,361 MW under Case I from KSK Mahanadi and Power Trading Company, signed an MoU with Power Grid Corporation of India for the development of transmission infrastructure for evacuating power from Bajaj Hindusthan?s upcoming thermal power project in Lalitpur, entailing an investment of Rs 2,300 crore and laying the foundation stone for 74 new sub-stations across the state and inaugurating 62 sub-stations that are ready.

Speaking to mediapersons at the launch of the projects, the chief minister said that the Srinagar hydro project, along with other projects that are expected to be commissioned by next year, will be able to fill the gap of 20% between demand and supply of power in the state.

The Srinagar hydro electric project is located in Paudi Garhwal district of Uttarakhand and the project was conceptualised in 1984 when UP was still undivided. After Uttarakhand was carved out from UP in 2000, the project, which is located on the banks of Alaknanda river, was handed over to the GVK group by former chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav in 2006.

Mulayam?s shocker for Akhilesh

Even while Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav went on a blitzkreig to launch power projects worth Rs 15,784 crore, he got a shocker when SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav pulled up his son saying he was running a government of sycophants and that he should be more alert. Publicly rebuking his son, Mulayam said, ?Chief minister, speak up. Tell the people that the previous government did not do any development work in its tenure of five years and that has set back the state by many years. Be careful of sycophants surrounding you.?
