The Tatas followed by Reliance Industries, Infosys and ITC have emerged as the best performers on sustainable development indicators, according to just released 'BT Sustainable Development (SD) Index an assessment of business performance in India 2009-10'.

When it comes to sustainable development issues, companies rate water resource management as the most important issue requiring urgent attention. Education, healthcare, natural resource management and climate change are the other pressing issues.

Though the public awareness on sustainable development is on the rise, it's not being matched by real progress at the ground level in India or abroad, notes the report. Arun Seth, chairman, BT India, told FE, It's good that the awareness about sustainable development issues is increasing, but now we need to translate it into real action. There is need to align intent with action.

Corporate performance on sustainable development has come down since since 2008 and is lacking mostly in the areas of climate change, air pollution and solid waste management. Most respondents attribute it to lack of political will and interest by the corporate sector and not technology and cost.

Developed in partnership with global public opinion company GlobeScan, the BT SD Index findings are based on a survey of 253 senior, academic, corporate, government, media and NGO leaders from all over India and measure perception about business performance on sustainable development indicators and not actual performance.
