450 mw wind power capacity addition by March 2006

The government said on Friday that around 450 mw of wind power capacity would be added by March-end, taking total capacity addition in the financial year to 1,200 mw.

Around 750 mw wind power capacity has been added since the beginning of the current financial year, and another 450 mw would be added by March, non-conventional energy sources secretary AM Gokhale told reporters.

The country had added around 1,100 mw in the last financial year, he said, adding the total wind power capacity is now about 4,200 mw.With the rapid growth in wind power, the country has attained fourth position in the world, surpassing Denmark this year, he said.

The MNES secretary said the government has decided to set up 500 district advisory committees across the country to attract investment from the private sector. He said the department will reach out to around 25,000 remote villages which do not have grid connectivity and conventional power supply.
