38% Rise In Edible Oil Imports

The 300 sensitive tariff lines monitored by the commerce ministry registered a growth of 31 per cent during April-December 2003 with sharp increases in import of commodities like edible oil, alcoholic beverages and rubber.

Imports of edible oil increased from Rs 6,459 crore in April-December 2002 to Rs 8,954 crore in April-December 2003 registering a growth of 38.6 per cent.

While import of crude oil increased by 30 per cent, that of refined palm oil and palmolein increased by 89 per cent. Percentage share of crude to the total edible oil remained as high as 80 per cent indicating a better utilisation of the processing capacity in the country.
