Sugarcane dues: Supreme Court seeks reply from govt, sugar mills on timely payment plea

These 11 states – Uttar Pradesh, Maharshtra, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Gujarat, Bihar, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu – produce bulk of the sugarcane in the country.

The petition sought direction to the Centre and state governments to file affidavits setting out the details of the amounts due, the amounts paid and arrears by the sugar mills to the sugarcane grower or their cooperatives for sale of their cane along with interest thereon at 15% on year-wise from 2018 to 2020.

No change in sugarcane prices this season in Uttar Pradesh

This is the third straight year when the state government has decided not to hike the price of cane. The SAP was last increased by Rs 10 per quintal in 2017, soon after the Yogi Adityanath government came to power.

Elections in the state are scheduled to be held by March 2021, when the crushing would be in progress.
