India’s unemployment rate reached 5.4% in April-June 2026, the highest in four quarters, affecting both rural and urban areas. The rise in joblessness was mainly among young females in cities. Out of the 566 million employed, 402 million were male and 164 million were female. The labour force participation rate also decreased, raising concerns about the declining female participation rate.
