El Nino may push India’s power demand to 1,830 BU in FY27 after record 271 GW peak
India’s power sector is predicted to experience a 6-7% rise in electricity consumption in FY27, driven by hot weather and the El Niño phenomenon. In May, the country saw its highest-ever peak power demand of 271 GW, fueled by prolonged heatwaves, manufacturing growth, and renewable energy expansion. Despite this, coal remains the main source of power, making up 68.25% of total generation.
