India is expanding its emergency crude buffer by adding a 1.75-million-tonne reserve at Mangaluru and approving the second phase of the Strategic Petroleum Reserves programme. This will increase emergency coverage to over 20 days of consumption and the government is making efforts to make the reserves financially viable.
