For city dwellers globally, one of the highest expenditures on a daily basis is transportation – this is a recurring lifelong expense. While we will not go into the relative merits or demerits of modes of transportation in various cities across the world, here we list, as per a Deutsche Bank report, cities around the world that are the most expensive in terms of transportation. The list consists of 47 cities. Global financial hub London has predictably emerged as the most expensive city in the world when it comes to public transport. It even manages to put in shade New York, which comes in at the fourth spot. Surprisingly, Dublin and Auckland emerge in 2nd and 3rd spots, eclipsing NY! Japan, ranked number 5 on the list is the most expensive city for public transport in Asia. Certain Indian cities too have made it to this priciest list, but no, they are not anywhere in the top 10, nor even top 20. Among them are Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai. In London, the most expensive city in the world for public transportation, you’ll need to shell out nearly $175 or a little over Rs 11,300 for a month for riding the Tube. In New York City, a monthly transit pass costs approximately $120 or nearly Rs 7,800.
The three Indian cities on the list are Bengaluru (ranked at number 42), New Delhi (ranked at number 46) and New Delhi (ranked at number 47), with Bengaluru being the most expensive city for public transport in the country.
According to the report commuting via the Bengaluru Metro for a month will set you back by $ 27.7 or nearly Rs 1,800. Using the Delhi Metro for a month, according to the report, would cost you a little over $ 20.6 or Rs 1,300. The cost of using the metro in Mumbai is $15 or Rs 950.
