A number of stories about an ‘impending’ World War 3 is doing the rounds on the internet for the last several says. But are these stories telling the truth or merely exercises in banking on fear?
The stories mostly published on websites in the West claim that World War 3 will happen because of the rising tensions between Russia and the US, and between the China and the US. Thankfully, there is no mention of the tension between India and Pakistan. So at least, some in the West doesn’t think that India and its neighbour would trigger the third World War. Or, if both countries go to war, they would be on their own.
Consider some of the news published on such websites:
World War 3: Russia & China Telling Citizens To Prepare For Nuclear War
This report in the moningledger.com claim that China is upgrading its nuclear equipment and Russia is carrying out “massive civil defence drill”. According to the story, these exercises are being conducted as “fears of World War 3” is growing by the day.
Vladimir Putin tells the US ‘If you want a war, you will get one – EVERYWHERE’
The misleading headline in the dailystar.co.uk claims Russian President Vladimir Putin as directly threatening the US of the war. However, as you read more, the threatening statement is actually made by a retired Russian military general.
Interestingly, the recent ‘viral’ posts on World War 3 has not caught the fancy of more reputed media in the West — be it the NYTs of the US or the BBCs and Guardians of the UK.
Fear is good for virality and so is war. The World War 3 may or may not happen soon, but the World War 3 has already been started on the internet. In the age of digital media, we must not but prepare for the World War 3 that is already being forced on all by the keywords and hashtags in the West. For the real World War 3 may leave us all obliterated.
