Yet, another shooting incident took place in the US and this time in a hospital of New York City. A gunman identified as a doctor opened fire inside the Bronx- Lebanon Hospital with an assault rifle yesterday. A law enforcement officer told CNN that a woman was killed in the gunfire and at least six other people were injured. The doctor then shot himself. The officers added that the shooter was identified as DR. Henry Bello and was an ex-employee of the hospital. Police officers found the dead body of the gunman on the 17th floor of the hospital. New York City Commissioner James O’Neill said told CNN that the doctor died of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He added that the body of the dead woman was also found near his body. O’Neil went on to say that six people were injured on the 16th floor out of which five are in serious condition.
The hospital’s fire alarm system went off during the siege, apparently because the shooter tried to set himself on fire, O’Neill said. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio called this as an act of work-related violence. The FBI also said that the shooting did not appear to be an act of terrorism. The shooting started a little before 3 p.m. ET at the 972-bed hospital, one of the largest providers of outpatient services in New York.
Video images from the scene showed hospital employees and others coming out of the hospital’s main entrance, their hands in the air, and crossing the street toward awaiting police officers.
Krystal Rivera, a 23-year-old patient at the hospital, said she was with her hospital roommate, a visitor and a nurse from the floor when they heard gunshots. She said,”I barricaded the door with an IV machine, two chairs and my whole bed.”
In the recent years, hospitals have been an active site of shooting situations. In a similar incident in early 2015, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston a cardiac surgeon Michael Davidson was shot dead by a patient’s family member. The shooter then killed himself. Another shooting took place in Florida last July where an elderly female patient and a female hospital worker were killed by a man who entered the patient’s room and opened fire.
