Everyone and his uncle have been saying that Donald Trump is a loose cannon and can’t be trusted to run the country. Perhaps. If you wind back to the 1980s, the person who grabbed the limelight then was former Hollywood actor Ronald Reagan. He did not do particularly well as an actor, he did cowboy roles, especially with the likes of John Wayne ruling the Hollywood roost. However, he defied all odds to not just win the elections to be the President of America, he even managed to keep the economy on an even keel and regularly rattled arms, nuclear ones even, against the Russians in particular. Short to say, there were not too many things that went wrong in America under his reign. America survived him and stayed as the No. 1 superpower in the world.
Now, Donald Trump is a businessman and understands the profit and loss sheet better than most. He knows what it is like to build up a business, and a reputation, and keep it at stratospheric heights for long periods of time. He may have been bankrupted in his long career, but he managed to rebuild his empire and has not looked back since then.
So, are we saying that Donald Trump will be great for America based just on the fact that he is a great businessman? Not really, but as far as the naysayers are concerned, if the American people elect him as the next president, the sky will not fall, for the country, or the world at large. There is so much damage he can do. And, he may not have a plan for the long list of American ailments, Hillary Clinton definitely does, but then, he is a wily man and knows how to get people to work unitedly towards one purpose. Also, one must remember that Trump has risen from nowhere to become a genuine contender for the top post in the US. Surely, that did not happen by chance. He has worked hard to create an image of himself in the voters’ minds and that is exactly what is paying dividends for him and giving the Democratic candidate sleepless nights. And finally, Trump has been battling, virtually alone, the massed ranks consisting of the current President Barack Obama, the First Lady Michelle Obama, the Democratic contender Hillary Clinton and, not to forget, former president Bill Clinton. Is he intelligent enough? Surely, the question is passe.
