In a first of its kind incident, husband of Luxembourg’s gay Prime Minister Xavier Bettel not just attended the NATO conference but was also seen having a great time with wives and girlfriends of other Presidents. Gauthier Destenay, who is an architect by profession joined the likes of US First Lady Melania Trump and others in Brussels on Thursday and posed for the cameras as their other halves were busy discussing important world matters. Gauthier Destenay and Xavier Bettel got married in 2015.
Xavier Bettel became the first gay EU leader to enter into a same-sex union when the couple married in a low-key ceremony two years ago. Their wedding came just months after Luxembourg legalised same-sex marriage.
This year’s NATO conference was in the news because of Donald Trump’s controversial comments. According to a report by AFP, Trump launched a salvo against Germany and its car sales in the United States. “The Germans are bad, very bad,” he said during a meeting with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, EU Council head Donald Tusk and other senior officials in Brussels, as per the report. “See the millions of cars they are selling in the US. Terrible. We will stop this,” he reportedly said according to “participants at the meeting”.
He also talked to other leaders about the need of spending more on defence to counter-terrorism. “This is not fair to the people and taxpayers of the United States,” Trump said. “If NATO countries made their full and complete contributions, then NATO would be even stronger than it is today, especially from the threat of terrorism,” he added.
