At least five people, including attacker and police officer, died in attack outside British Parliament, while 40 people were injured. Shots have been fired outside the Houses of Parliament in central London, according to news reports. While several reports are saying that loud explosions have been heard at the scene. Police have since closed off roads leading to Parliament Square. Police said they are treating the incident as terror attack until further information in received. Business in the House of Commons has been suspended as a precaution.

7:10 am: The Metropolitan Police named the police officer killed as 48-year-old Keith Palmer and also confirmed that the attacker was ‘known’ to the police.

7:08 am: “I can also now confirm three members of the public also lost their lives in this attack. And I confirmed earlier, the suspected attacker was shot dead by an armed officer -therefore meaning we now have five people in total who have died, said Mark Rowley, national lead for Counter Terrorism Policing and the Acting Deputy Commissioner.

9.22 pm: British police said they were treating an incident in which a policeman was stabbed inside the perimeter of Britain’s parliament building as a terrorist incident. “Officers – including firearms officers – remain on the scene and we are treating this as a terrorist incident until we know otherwise,” police said in a statement.

9.15 pm: MPs were placed in lockdown within the House of Commons chamber as the incident unfolded. The House of Commons Leader told MPs that he believes a police officer was stabbed and the attacker was shot.

9.10 pm: In a related incident, the BBC is reporting a large vehcile mowing down at least five people and crashing into the side of the Parliament building. The metropolitan police has asked residents to avoid Parliament Square, Whitehall, Westminster & Lambeth Bridge, Victoria St up to junction with Broadway & Victoria Embankment/tube.
