Florida High School shooting: The killing of 17 people, including a number of students, at a High School in Florida, US by a gun-wielding alumnus has shocked the world. The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida shooting is said to be the eighth-deadliest attack in modern US history. Before this, at least 17 school shootings have taken place in the country and the latest incident has certainly pointed fingers at the absence of gun control laws in America. There have been a number of mass shootings which made headlines but went into oblivion. However, the memory of those brutal unwanted incidents still sends chills down our spine. A country music concert in Las Vegas turned into the tragedy when a 64-year-old man opened fire killing 58 and injuring hundreds of people. Later, the attacker was reportedly killed by a SWAT team. It was the deadliest mass shooting in the US in terms of the number of casulaties.
2. Orlando shooting in 2016: Casualty- 49
Revelers inside a reported gay night-club witnessed the horror unfolding before them. Islamic State had claimed the responsibility for the shooting. While a debate raged, the US Senate rejected adopting gun controlling measures.
3. Virginia Tech University shooting in Blacksburg: Casualty- 32
A massacre in one of the prestigious universities shocked the world. Later it was revealed that a South Korean student was the gunman.
4. Newtown Connecticut mass shooting in 2012: Casualty- 27
The shocking incident took place at an elementary school. Of the dead people, there were 20 children aged from 5 to 10 years. The gunman was shot dead inside the school.
5. Sutherland Springs shooting in Texas 2017: Casualty 26
Tragedy struck a Baptist church in Texas where people were killed during Sunday morning services. Over 20 people were injured.
6. Killeen shooting in Texas in 1991: Casualty 23
The mass shooting took place in a cafeteria. 22 people were killed by a gunman. The gunman later killed himself.
7. San Ysidro massacre in San Diego, California, 1984: Casualty – 21
Tragedy struck when James Huberty (41) opened fire before being shot dead by a SWAT team sniper. Close to 19 people were injured in the attack that occured in and around a McDonald’s restaurant.

The latest attack finds its place at the eighth spot on this list. The perpetrator, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, opened fire at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. Cruz studied in the same school and was expelled. He has been arrested.
9. San Bernardino shooting, 2015: Casualty – 14
All hell broke loose when a married couple identified as Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik targeted a San Bernardino County Department of Public Health Christmas party of about 80 employees in a rented banquet room. The perptrators, both of pakistani descent, fled the scene but were shot down by the police within hours.
10. Edmond, Oklahoma shooting in 1986: Casualty – 14
On August 20, 1986, a postal worker identified as Patrick Sherrill launched a deadly attack against his co-workers inside a post office. The rampage reportedly lasted less than fifteen minutes, and Sherrill committed suicide.
With so many mass-shootings taking place in the oldest democracy in the world, political reactions have once again started pouring in, raising questions over the long-pending gun control legislation in the country. In the latest case, the attacker was 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz who was suspended by the school authority due to behavioural issues. He was carrying a sophisticated AR-15 rifle that he used in the attack. He has been arrested and a probe is on to ascertain whether he was carrying a second arm. Meanwhile, an Indian-American student was also on the injured list and was admitted to hospital after the firing. US President Donald Trump has expressed condolences over the incident and offered prayers.
