Donald Trump, the Republican Presidential candidate in the US, is probably the first high-profile international personality who thinks that World War 3 could be a reality. However, Trump says, it would happen only because of his opponent Hillary Clinton’s policy for Syria.
With tensions apparently mounting between US and Russia in recent times, the internet has been flooded with rumours and ‘stories’ of World War 3. The stories mostly published on websites in the West claim that World War 3 will happen because of rising tensions between Russia and the US, and between the China and the US. There were also reports that Russia has warned its citizens to look for nuclear bomb shelters. However, no such report appeared in the mainstream Western media. Moreover, no big international personality, except Trump, has voiced the possibility of a World War 3.
In an exclusive interview to Reuters, Trump said that Clinton’s plan for Syria has the potential for conflict with military forces from nuclear-armed Russia, which would “lead to World War 3”. Trump has played down the US goal of persuading Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down. Instead, he says the focus should be on defeating the Islamic State.
Questioning as to how Clinton would negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin after demonising him, Trump also blamed President Barack Obama for the “downturn” in US-Philippines relations under the new Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte.
Talking about the civil war in Syria, Trump said that Clinton could drag the US into a world war with a more “aggressive posture toward resolving the conflict.” Clinton had earlier called for setting up a “no-fly zone” and “safe zones” on ground to protect non-combatants. Analysts, however, feared that protecting such zones may put the US in a situation of direct conflict with Russian fighter jets. “What we should do is focus on ISIS. We should not be focusing on Syria,” Trump said, adding, “You’re going to end up in World War 3 over Syria if we listen to Hillary Clinton.”
