After being criticized for letting his daughter Ivanka Trump take his seat at the G20 meeting, United States President Donald Trump hit out at Chelsea Clinton for getting different treatment from the media. He said that if she had done the same for her mother, the 2016 Presidential candidate, Hilary Clinton, then the treatment by the media would have been different. He said, “When I left Conference Room for short meetings with Japan and other countries, I asked Ivanka to hold seat. Very standard. Angela M [German Chancellor Angela Merkel] agrees! If Chelsea Clinton were asked to hold the seat for her mother, as her mother gave our country away, the Fake News would say CHELSEA FOR PRES!” Trump, at the G20 Summit at Hamburg, Germany, left his seat to attend a meeting when Ivanka took his place briefly alongside world leaders including British Prime Minister Theresa May and Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to the Washington Post. The move attracted widespread criticism as it was a breach of protocol by putting a family member who is not the head of a state to be seated there.
According to Former NATO Ambassador Nicholas Burns, the place could have been filled by the secretary of state, instead of the first daughter. Merkel without stating whether the move was right on Trump’s part, told the paper, “The delegations themselves decide, should the president not be present for a meeting, who will take the chair, and Ivanka Trump was part of the American delegation.”
