Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram has announced that the government would roll out direct cash transfer scheme for subsidy beneficiaries from January 01, 2013. Chidambaram said that initially it would be launched in 51 districts of India, spread over 16 states as a pilot project. The minister said the government had identified 42 schemes such as scholarship and old age pension schemes to help the poor with direct cash remittances. He added that beneficiaries could withdraw money from hand-held ATM, carried by banking correspondents in the rural areas.
