Indian brand Micromax is now the tenth largest phone brand in the world. The latest Gartner Inc worldwide mobile phones sales report for Q1, 2015 says Micromax has a 1.8 per cent market share globally with 8,158,000 units sold.
“During this quarter, local brands and Chinese vendors came out as the key winners in emerging markets,” said Anshul Gupta, research director at Gartner. “These vendors recorded an average growth of 73 per cent in smartphone sales and saw their combined share go up from 38 per cent to 47 per cent during the first quarter of 2015.”
Globally, despite fall in sales, Samsung is still number 1 with 24.2 per cent of the smartphone market and 21.4 per cent of the overall handset market. “Despite a weak first quarter globally, Samsung’s performance returned to growth quarter-on-quarter, with an 11 per cent increase from the fourth quarter of 2014. We expect Samsung’s drop rate to be slower than that seen in recent quarters with sales of its new S6 smartphones starting in the second quarter of 2015, and its Galaxy Alpha receiving good response,” said Gupta.
In a release, Micromax claimed it gained competitive advantage owing to its “continued investment in the best technological innovations, right understanding the consumer needs & expectations, innovating continuously for devices & services, and a robust offline & online distribution network to provide a world class experience for its consumers”.
Micromax has also entered SAARC markets and is exploring new markets like Russia over the past year.
