Mukesh Ambani is wealthiest Indian cricket team owner, worth $21.2 bn: report

Singapore : With the 2014 Indian Premier League (IPL) season in full swing, Wealth‐X today revealed that business tycoon Mukesh Ambani is the wealthiest Indian cricket team owner with an estimated net worth of US$21.2 billion, almost 10 times the personal fortune of media baron Kalanithi Maran, who is in second spot with US$2.2 billion. Maran owns Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Collectively, the eight ultra high net worth (UHNW) individuals on the Wealth-­X list – which includes Bollywood actress Preity Zinta who co-­owns Kings XI Punjab – control US$25.17 billion of the US$935 billion wealth in India.

Shah Rukh Khan, who co-owns Kolkata Knight Riders, is worth $600 million.

To compile the list, Wealth-­X selected the most prominent and significant shareholder from each of the eight teams competing in the IPL for the 2014 season.

Mukesh Ambani is the chairman, managing director and the largest shareholder of Reliance Industries, a Fortune Global 500 company that deals mainly in refining, petrochemicals, and

in the oil and gas sectors.

Through Reliance, Ambani owns the Mumbai Indians, the defending IPL champions that defeated N Srinivasan’s Chennai Super Kings in the 2013 finals.

The 2014 IPL season began on April 16 and runs until June 1. There are eight teams vying for the trophy this season, one fewer than 2013 after the withdrawal of the Pune Warriors India.
