This year the great Indian luxury car race got even more exciting. While initially Audi overtook BMW to emerge as the largest luxury car player in India (BMW had been reigning supreme for almost three years), by the middle of the year it was the turn of Mercedes-Benz to strike back. The company, which began 2013 as the ‘Year of Offensive’, in July even managed to briefly edge past sales of Audi. In the July-September period, Mercedes-Benz registered 58% growth year on year. So, while in the July-September period it sold 2,696 units, in September alone the company recorded its best ever monthly sales of 1,011 units. The reason was some really nice products from the Stuttgart-based company—the GL-Class, the A-Class, the B-Class diesel, the new E-Class and more. As a cherry on top, recently it launched the Edition C of the C-Class in India, a limited edition version that essentially celebrates the over 10 million cars of the C-Class family sold worldwide since its first launch in 1982.
The Edition C boasts of stylish exteriors. It has an AMG body styling with front and rear apron and side sill panels, a radiator grille with the centrally positioned three-pointed star and fins in high-gloss black. The car comes with black-textured 17-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, which give the car a distinctive appearance. It has the Edition C badging on the wings and also has dark-tinted headlamps, chromed tailpipe trims and an electric sunroof.
Enter the car and you are greeted by stylish detailing and a wealth of high-quality equipment. The three-spoke multi-function steering wheel is crafted in Nappa leather and is nice to hold. The sport seats with contrast stitching are quite comfortable. The lighting package inside the cabin is impressive—illuminated front foot-well, illuminated interior handle recesses, illuminated door pockets and illuminated air vent thumbwheels. Then, you have the usual safety systems expected of a Mercedes-Benz. For instance, there is the driving assistance system that can even detect drowsiness, brake assist system, acceleration skid control, electronic stability program, crash responsive pedals, tyre pressure loss warning, and more. You also have six airbags all around. As far as telematics and multimedia systems are concerned, the Edition C gets features such as an 11.4-cm multifunctional colour display in the instrument cluster, navigation with latest maps, etc.
The Edition C is powered by a four-cylinder 2143-cc diesel engine with 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission, which enables reduced fuel consumption while delivering high output and torque. The engine has a rated power output of 125kW@3000-4200rpm and a peak torque of 400Nm@1400-2800rpm. The Edition C also uses the fuel saving Eco Start/Stop technology. Essentially, this car shares all mechanical components with the current C220 CDI that’s already on sale in India. Performance, thus, is strong, especially from 2000 rpm onwards and the power delivery is linear. The car breaks the 9 second barrier to 100 kmph and doesn’t run out of steam even at high three-figure speeds.
Priced at R39.16 lakh, ex-showroom, Mumbai, the Edition C is a bit on the expensive side, especially considering the fact that, for just a few lakh rupees more, you can buy the E-Class, which is not only a size bigger but is also a huge improvement over the previous E-Class. Also, remember the fact that the Edition C doesn’t feature any performance upgrades, it simply looks different. What works for the car is that it is a limited edition version (only 500 units will be sold), so if your idea of owning a car is exclusivity, go for it.
