iSEED announces winners of National Youth Ideas
iSEED, the Indian School for Entrepreneurs and Enterprise Development, has announced the winners of the National Youth Ideas Challenge, where over 7,500 students across 500 colleges participated, with ideas that have the potential to benefit humanity. Of the 2,800 idea entries to the contest, the first prize of R1 lakh was bagged by Siddharth, Akshay and Abhay from NSIT Delhi for their idea called LostBeatLive.com, a musical networking platform that aims at establishing an identity and creating a brand out of struggling musicians. The second prize was won by Omkara, a student from Miranda House, Delhi, while the third prize was given to Devesh, Akshay and Anubha from Bharati Vidyapeeth, Delhi.
Brand loyalties follow us around, study finds
Chicago Booth professors have found that people develop preferences young, and they often are slow to change after a move. When you’re navigating the aisles at your local grocery, do you reach for Tide or Cheer? How about Coke or Pepsi? Who wins the battle between Maxwell House and Folgers? Do you go for the same brand every time, regardless of price differences or sales? These questions piqued the curiosity of researchers at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, who found that geography plays a large role in developing brand loyalty, and that once ingrained we are reluctant to give those brands up—even if we move. Chicago Booth professors Matthew Gentzkow and Jean-Pierre Dubé, with Bart Bronnenberg of Tilburg University, built on previous research that Dubé and Bronnenberg had done with Sanjay Dhar, a professor of marketing at Chicago Booth, that looked at brand preferences by geography.
Blue-collared workers to take up online evaluation
In a bid to give vocational skill development a shot in the arm and make online assessments inclusive, Mettl, an online assessment company, has tied up with the ASDC (Automotive Skill Development Council), under the aegis of the NSDC, to assess students for over 30 job profiles. These profiles, in the automobile and ancillary industries, include that of automotive body technician, commercial vehicle driver, loading and unloading executive, machining assistant and painter. The ASDC programme is part of the STAR scheme launched earlier this year to award a scholarship of R10,000 to each student. The programme targets to train 25 million youth by 2020. “We believe that
India needs a rapid ramp up of specialised, trained youth to take up thousands of jobs that are being created to satiate the growth of the manufacturing sector,” said Ketan Kapoor, co-founder & CEO, Mettl.
India-NZ biz forum hosted in Ahmedabad by NRIBM
The second India-New Zealand business forum was recently hosted in Ahmedabad by Gujarat Law Society’s NR Institute of Business Management, in association with the University of Waikato, New Zealand, and Ficci. The High Commissioner of New Zealand in India, Jan Henderson, was present along with academic and corporate representatives from India, New Zealand, the US and the UK, including Sudhir Nanavati from Gujarat Law Society. “Exploiting Global Boundaries: Managing Business Transitions”, an edited book by the convenors of the forum, Hitesh Ruparel and Rajesh Asrani, was also released during the forum.
