Alkmaar fire coach
AZ Alkmaar fired coach Gertjan Verbeek on Sunday in a surprise move that came a day after they beat Dutch league leaders PSV Eindhoven to move to within two points of the top of the standings. "On the basis of a lack of chemistry between the squad and the coach and a lack of confidence, the club's directors do not see any possibility for further co-operation," the club said in a statement.
Pogba earns winner for Juventus
Juventus earned a narrow 1-0 win in a heated derby match at city rival Torino on Sunday, to move provisionally joint top of the table with Napoli. Paul Pogba scored a contentious 54th-minute winner, heading in the rebound after Carlos Tevez's header came off the crossbar. There were fierce protests from Torino, however, as Tevez appeared to be offside.
Mumbai FC draw again
Mumbai FC held Dempo SC 1-1 in a Round-2 encounter of I-League on Sunday. Trailing by a first-half goal scored by Jeje Lalpekhlua (45' + 3'), Mumbai FC found their savior in defender Anwar Ali (86thminute) to snare a point. Mumbai FC went into the game making one change opting for defender Valeriano Rebello in place of striker Jayesh Rane.
Taheer scores seven for Goa
Abu Taheer scored seven goals in a span of just under 20 minutes to help Infant Jesus Academy, Goa hammer Govt Secondary School, Lakshwadeep 10-0 and enter the quarterfinals of boy's u-14 category of the 54th Subroto Cup football tournament. Goa had taken the lead in the very first minute through Abhijeet and Taheer killed the contest by the 20th minute, scoring seven more goals (4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 13, 18). Meanwhile, North-eastern English School, Khabesoi, Manipur and Greenwood School, Kohima, Nagaland also advanced to the last eight stages with easy wins.
Mizoram crowned Jr champions
Mizoram pumped in five second half goals to thrash 10-man Assam 6-1 to clinch their maiden Junior Nationals Football Tournament title. Both the sides were level 1-1 at the breather but a mistake by Assam custodian Jikil Basumatary led to his expulsion at the stroke of half-time, turning the game on its head. Mizoram capitalised on their one-man advantage and the second half turned out to be a lop-sided affair as they win their maiden title of the Under-17 tournament.
Nantes see off Rennes
Newly promoted Nantes won 3-1 at Rennes to move above its opponent in the top half of the French league on Sunday. Montpellier was held to a fifth successive draw, finishing up 1-1 with Ajaccio in a match which both teams finished with 10 men.
Bremen held in Nuremberg
Japan midfielder Hiroshi Kiyotake scored one and set up another Sunday as Nuremberg twice came from behind to earn a 3-3 draw at Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga. Eintracht Braunschweig is still waiting for its first win since returning to the Bundesliga after 28 years following a 4-0 home defeat to Stuttgart.
Elche’s first win in 25 years
Elche beat Celta Vigo 1-0 thanks to Javi Marquez's solo effort to claim its first win in Spain's top flight in 25 years, while Levante's late goal gave it a 1-0 victory at Osasuna on Sunday. Marquez broke the deadlock on a counterattack in the 62nd minute. His low shot from an angle on the left side sent the ball in off the far post.
