Virender Sehwag and Anil Kumble have been great servants of Indian cricket, winning many matches for the team during their playing days. However, in an interesting turn of events, two legends might be facing off each other to grab the post of Indian team’s coach very soon. According to a report published by the Indian Express, Virender Sehwag has been asked by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to apply for the post of India coach which will make him a potential challenger to the incumbent Anil Kumble.
Kumble was given a 12-month contract by BCCI last year which will end after the ICC Champions Trophy next month. The board has already asked for applications to decide on the new coach and as per the report, a general manager of BCCI contacted Sehwag during the IPL. “We have contacted Sehwag during the IPL and asked him to consider applying for the job of India coach. But he won’t be the only one applying because we expect other former players to also throw their hats in the ring,” a top BCCI official was quoted saying in the report.
“The board wants to go through the process of selection of coach again. Also, the next contract is likely to run until the 2019 World Cup, so even the length of the contract has to be taken into consideration before appointing the coach. We don’t want a scenario where the players and the coach are not on the same page,” said another BCCI insider. Anil Kumble has demanded better wages for players as well as support staff and despite India winning five straight Test series under him, BCCI invited applications for the coach’s job.
“This is to ensure that the process remains fair. We don’t want a scenario where the decision to pick a coach gets influenced by what has happened in the pay negotiations where Kumble is bargaining hard with BCCI officials,” an official was quoted saying by The Indian Express. However, when Sehwag was contacted about this, he said that he has not been contacted yet with regard to applying for the India coach’s job.
