Virat Kohli-Anil Kumble face-off: Current Team India coach Kumble will not continue in his position after the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy following a rumoured rift with captain Kohli, reported CNN-News 18 citing sources. The report added that former Indian opener Virender Sehwag is the front runner to replace Kumble. NDTV also reported citing sources that Kumble is unwilling to continue as Team India Head Coach and has expressed his desire to leave after a rift emerged with Kohli. The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of BCCI which includes Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar will take the final decision on it. The news broke out just days before India’s crucial clash with Pakistan in Edgbaston.
However, BCCI joint secretary Amitabh Chaudhary on Thursday had denied any rift between Kumble and Kohli. “I am not aware of any. It’s purely in realm (sic figment) of imagination. These are purely speculative,” Chaudhary told reporters on the sidelines of India’s practice session, reported PTI. He added that BCCI was following usual process for selection of new coach. “Well this question has been answered in the past. It’s been going on for the past few days. It’s my pleasure to answer again. The BCCI is following a process. If you don’t follow a process, it’s not supposed to be good but if you follow a process, it’s supposed to be good,” Chaudhary added.
When the timing of process was questioned, Chaudhary defended BCCI by saying, “You show me, where’s the space in the calendar. We are playing one series after another and there’s no space when we could have done it. The deadline is over and we will soon announce the names of the shortlisted candidates.”
Only five players have applied for the job. The list includes names of Virender Sehwag, Lalchand Rajput, Dodda Ganesh, former Australian fast-bowler Tom Moody and Richard Pybus.
