Former Pakistan captain and all-rounder Shoaib Malik faced a massive backlash on micro-blogging website Twitter after he referred to Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami’s religion in a video. Malik was interacting with his fans in a video through International Cricket Council’s official Twitter handle. While answering to one of the fan’s question, he said Mohammed Shami is the best bowler in the Indian cricket team and ‘not because he is Muslim’.

When asked who, according to him was the best bowler in the Indian team, the former Pakistan captain said, “The best bowler in the Indian team is Mohammed Shami, not because he is Muslim. I have seen his bowling and played against him also. For me, I find him tough.” After this many fans pointed out that there was no need for Malik to mention Shami’s religion.

Here are some Twitter reactions:

India will take on Pakistan in its opening match of the tournament on June 4 in Edgbaston. While speaking to media before the tournament started, Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmad looked confident about his team’s chances against Virat Kohli’s team. “We have a better record against India in the Champions Trophy, not in other competitions. We are looking to maintain that against them and it’s very exciting,” he said at his pre-tournament press conference.

“We have nothing to lose, we just want to play our natural game. We have just played a very good series in the West Indies, where the players performed very well. We are very hopeful of playing well in this tournament and we want to win it. It is a very exciting time for us, there have been a lot of practice sessions at Edgbaston and we are ready to play,” he said.
