Union Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and ace boxer Mary Kom inaugurated an indoor stadium at B.H. College in Barpeta district of Assam.
The sports minister asserted that the there is a need for better infrastructure for promoting sports in the state.
“This is a very good initiative. B.H. College is one of the most important colleges in Assam where thousands of students are studying. In order to create an environment conducive to sports, the college authorities, staff and management have taken this good step so that talented sports persons from the nearby area will get a chance to practice,” said Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Sports Minister.
Lack of proper training facilities is a major hindrance to the development of sports in the region which has produced a number of national and international level players in different disciplines.
Things are gradually changing and a number of stadiums and sports complexes have come up in the different northeastern states, which are hugely benefiting the youngsters.
“Due to the coming up of this ground, I believe that in the coming days students and youngsters will have dreams of doing well in sports,” said Mary Kom, Boxer.
Youth in the northeast have potential to do well in sports, and further initiatives to promote sports and allied infrastructure in the region will definitely prove beneficial in the long run.
