A goal in each half from Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling gave Liverpool a hard fought 2-0 win over Southampton at St. Mary’s in the Premier League on Sunday.
Coutinho collected a pass 25 yards out before curling a tremendous strike beyond the reach of outstretched Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster in the third minute.
Southampton’s Filip Djuricic had two strong penalty appeals rejected by referee Kevin Friend in the opening five.
The home side had the majority of possession in the second half but was punished for some poor defending by Sterling in the 73rd. After Matt Targett slipped as he attempted to clear an Alberto Moreno cross, Sterling pounced on the loose ball, drilling a low effort past Forster to secure Liverpool’s win.
