World number one Novak Djokovic’ quest for a maiden French Open title began with ease as he swept aside Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei in straight sets to storm into the second round of the tournament here at Roland Garros on Tuesday.

The Serbian champion, who is aiming to become just the eighth man in history to complete the career Grand Slam, smashed 34 winners to outclass Lu 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round contest that lasted for one and a half hour.

With the win, Djokovic has now set up a clash against Belgian qualifier Steve Darcis, who also progressed through to the next round after seeing off Turkish qualifier Marsel Ilhan 6-3, 6-4, 6-0.

In the women’s singles event, Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber knocked out of the tournament after suffering a shocking first-round defeat 2-6, 6-3,3-6 at the hands of Kiki Bertens, the world No 58, in the opening round.
