LIVE Cricket score, India vs New Zealand Day 2 Test 1: After getting off to a shocking start courtesy some rank bad batting coupled with an even worse strategic bungle in playing aggressive cricket in the face of a rampant opposition, the Virat Kohli led team is left with with a bloody nose that it will really have to play out of its skin to wipe off. From this moment on, India will be back pedalling unless their bowlers bowl to a plan and effect a revival. Almost everything now rests on the shoulders of R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja (as spinners, not batsmen), while Virat Kohli has to show that he has the strategic acumen to pull the team back from the brink and fightback. The Kiwis on their part have played steady cricket, the kind they are known for. No flamboyance, they just stuck to a plan and bowled line and length to frustrate the Indians who looked to be in a hurry to finish off the Kanpur Test and go home. Of course, Kane Williamson made some brilliant decisions as a skipper, especially in showing the courage to take the new ball when it became due even though his spinners were doing well with the old one.

Team India is in desperate straits and will need a complete team effort to try and revive their fortunes from this stage. An individual can at most halt the Kiwis a little, but if all the players contribute now with their fielding catching and bowling in equal measure, the visitors can be pegged back. Can Team India do that? Check out the commentary.

Here is the LIVE India vs NZ Kanpur day 1, Test 1 commentary and live streaming:

* There it is, umpires call off play for the rest of the day as conditions don’t improve.

* Rain has stopped play after Tea. Umpires will inspect pitch at 3.45 pm

* Surprise! Rain at the Kanpur Green Park! Players and umpires come off and ground staff cover the strip

* At tea, New Zealand are 152/1,  with Kane Williamson batting on 65, and opener Tom Latham 56. NZ trail India by 166 runs.

* Williamson blasts a four to bring up the 150 for Kiwis. A truly skipper’s innings this!

* 15 minutes to go for tea. Virat Kohli tries to change attack from spin to pace, brings in Umesh Yadav. No luck.

* The Indian spinners are finally getting some purchase from the pitch after trying desperately all morning. There is turn and there is bounce. It is troubling the Kiwi batsmen no end. However, it has taken over 40 overs of the NZ innings for that to happen. And by now they have batted themselves into a superbly strong position.

* Is that OUT? No! Saha appealed for a caught-behind, but Jadeja was late to respond in kind. Umpire unmoved. Williamson escapes.

* Tom Latham survives a fine Ashwin over. The turn is humongous! The ball pitched outside leg stump but goes all the way in front of the wickets on way to slips!

* Kane Williamson reached his 50. While it is early days yet, this one may prove to be one of his most important. He has already scored 23 fifties in his career!

* 50 for Latham. Magnificent innings. He has looked rock solid. Was single-handedly responsible in grinding down the Indian attack. This is only his 8th fifty.

Tom Latham survives unique ‘helmet’ appeal; check out video here

* OUT! NOT OUT! Third umpire gives benefit of doubt to Latham after what looked like a catch off bat and boot. KL Rahul at short-leg had appealed vociferously. Batsman refused to walk.

* Live score NZ 98/1 in 31 overs with Tom Latham batting 36, and Kane Williamson 36. India are finally being able to slow the flow of runs. The wickets may not be coming, but at least the spinenrs are finding enough purchase from the pitch to slow down the Kiwi run onslaught.

* Live score NZ 95/1 in 29 overs with Tom Latham 36, and Kane Williamson 34. India are finding themselves a bowler short, a spinner in particular. Just Jadeja and Ashwin are not proving enough. In contrast, Kiwis have as many as 3!

* Live score NZ 91/1 in 28 overs with Tom Latham batting 34, and Kane Williamson 32.

* Live score NZ 89/1 in 27 overs with Tom Latham on 33, and Kane Williamson 31. Shami bowls. 4! Latham smacks Shami down square leg region.

* Live score NZ 85/1 in 26 overs with Tom Latham on 29, and Kane Williamson 31. 50 partnership up for Latham and Williamson.

POST-LUNCH SESSION

* NZ score 71/1 in 20 overs with Tom Latham batting on 25, and Kane Williamson 21. The Kiwis are in as big a hurry to score as the Indians were! The run rate is galloping. The difference is that the Kiwis are not going for big, arrogant, shots. They are taking singles. Will require them to be really fit as it is a hot day!

* NZ score 69/1 in 18 overs with Tom Latham batting 24, Kane Williamson 20. Williamson steps forward and blasts a full toss off Ashwin for a 4! The Kiwis are targetting Ashwin.

* NZ score 51/1 in 16 with Tom Latham batting 19, and Kane Williamson 7.

* NZ score 50/1 15 in overs with Tom Latham on 18, and Kane Williamson 7. — New Zealand bring up their fifty. Very productive session for the visitors. They have scored at will and not really given any chance to the Indian bowlers, except to lose the solitary wicket. Virat Kohli and coach Anil Kumble will do well to look at how NZ are building their innings.

* NZ score 36/1 in 11 overs with Tom Latham batting 11, Kane Williamson 0. Ashwin to start bowling now – Jadeja taken off. Gives up one run to Latham. No spin available. Bounce is not great either.

New Zealand Lose First Wicket

* NZ score 35/1 in Overs 9.3 overs; Tom Latham batting on 10. OUT! Yadav comes back and strikes immediately, the dangerous Guptill is sent packing. Bowling over the wicket, Yadav raps the batsman on the pads! OUT PLUMB! Martin Guptill lbw Umesh Yadav 21 (31). Pitched just on off, the ball came back in and Guptill failed to account for turn and desperately lunged at the ball to no avail. Finally, Kiwis lose a wicket!

* NZ score 35/0 in 9 overs. Martin Guptill batting on 21, Tom Latham 10. No luck for Jadeja. Ordinary over.

* NZ score 34/0 in 7 overs with Martin Guptill batting 20, and Tom Latham 10. Guptill blasts the ball for a 4 through mid off. Jadeja scratches his chin. This was the first ball of a new over. More misery for Jadeja as he gives up 4 byes! Saha the guilty party although he he was blinded by the batsman’s extravagant sweep attempt that missed the ball.

* NZ score 24/0 in 6 overs with Guptill batting on 15, and Tom Latham 9. Shami is now bowling around the wickets. Latham faces. Good change by bowler. Latham gets an edge that rockets past the gully fielder.

* NZ score 20/0 in 5 overs with Guptill batting 15 and Tom Latham 5. 4! Guptill sweeps sweetly for a 4! The bowler gets  his own back as the ball raps the batsman on the pads. Unlucky for India as there was an inside edge.

* NZ score 13/0 in 3overs with Guptill batting 8 and, Tom Latham 5. Shami taken off by Kohli just after 1 over to bring on Jadeja. That was quick! No faith in the bowler by the skipper! Also, Jadeja is not even the frontline Indian spinner! Latham takes a single. Guptill is hit on the pads but off an inside edge.

* NZ score 11/0 in 2 overs with Martin Guptill batting 7, Tom Latham 4. Wide ball from Yadav is smashed by Guptill through covers. Bowler gets the next ball to bounce surprisingly, catches Guptill off guard. No harm done.

* NZ score 5/0 in 1 over with Martin Guptill batting 1, and Tom Latham 4. — Single for Guptill and Latham slams a 4 through point. Bad omen for India as Shami bowls a tepid over that gives the Kiwis to settle down. Bad bowling. It should have been a tight over to take advantage of the batsmen still not being used to the pitch and the conditions.

THE NEW ZEALAND INNINGS STARTS

* The fightback did not last long. Again the hurry to score runs has cost India. The batsmen were scoring runs like they were playing an ODI match. Umesh Yadav caught the bug too and he perished too. The urge to occupy the crease was clearly not there. The urgency of staying on the wicket is important as India wants Kiwis to bat when the wicket is falling apart after the 2nd day and clearly, the batsmen have failed to match that strategy with their batting at the crease. Rank bad decision making by the powers that be in the Indian side.

* India score 318 in 97 overs Ravindra Jadeja left stranded at 42 not out. Kane Williamson summons Neil Wagner and immediately gets an edge off Umesh’ bat, but he survives! This time the ball is on legside. OUT! Umesh Yadav OUT! Umesh looks for runs down the legside but all he does is get an edge and is caught behind brilliantly by the ‘keeper. Umesh Yadav c BJ Watling b Neil Wagner 9 (27)

* India score 318/9 in 96 overs with Ravindra Jadeja batting on 42, and Umesh Yadav 9. Trent Boult is facing a torrid time. He is not putting the ball in the right places. In fact, he is spraying it a bit. Jadeja takes full advantage to get quick runs. A wide ball is slammed by Jadeja and would have fetched him a boundary but for the fielder getting a hand to it. This is followed by a full toss and Jadeja pushes it past extra cover for 4!

* India score 312/9 in 95 overs with Ravindra Jadeja batting 36, and Umesh Yadav 9. Jadeja faces Santner after Yadav takes a sharp single. 6! Stand and deliver! Jadeja walks down the pitch and blasts the ball over the boundary. To make sure he farms the bowling as much as possible to protect Yadav, Jadeja takes a single off the 5th ball.

* Ravindra Jadeja and Umesh Yadav have denied a breakthrough to the Kiwis and have added runs at a quick clip early in the morning

* India score 304/9 in 94 overs with Ravindra Jadeja batting o 29, Umesh Yadav 8. Tren Boult tries his hand at some short-pitched stuff and gets a good result. The bowler forces Jadeja into evasive action and a leading edge results but it falls in safe zone. Great ball, poor reaction from the batsman. Boult follows it up with a fuller delivery and the strategy is effective! It raps Jadeja on the pad. It was going down leg! Another superb delivery gets the inside edge off Jadeja’s bat, but he gets a boundary as the fielder misfields! Not expected of the Kiwis to give away free runs! A clearly furious Boult fires another bouncer and Jadeja takes evasive action. Much better from the Indian batsman.

* India score 300/9 in 93 overs with Ravindra Jadeja batting on 25, and Umesh Yadav 8. Santner is bowling and Jadeja is defending. Must ensure he stays on the crease for as long as possible. But he abandons that strategy and slams a 4! Goes back on the backfoot and guides it to the cover boundary. Takes one run and brings up 300. Phew! That took some doing, Team India! Huffing and puffing all the way.

* India score 295/9 in 92 overs with Ravindra Jadeja batting 20, and Umesh Yadav 8. Danger lurks for India as Boult to bowl to Umesh. The tailender has no clue about where the ball is going. Plays and misses through the over. Does manage to get his bat in front of the ball when it is within the stumps.

* India score 295/9 in 91 overs with Ravindra Jadeja batting 20, and Umesh Yadav 8. 4! Jadeja makes his intentions clear right from the start! Mitchell Santner got the first 5 balls to go without giving away any runs, but then Jadeja exploded off the last one!
