The Indian premier League-Season 10 will be underway in a matter of days now. And led by India discard and the highest run scorer of the IPL, Suresh Raina, the Gujarat Lions will be looking to make a mark in the 10th edition of the most popular T20 league in the world. Gujarat Lions, from the outside, looks like one-half of the now banned Chennai Super Kings; the other half being Pune Supergiants. However, if the smart guess is to be made, Gujarat managed to get the best bargain of the deal when they dug out Dwyane Bravo, Suresh Raina, Dwyane Smith and Brendon McCullum. Suresh Raina, who has been out of favours with the Indian team will be looking to make a comeback on the basis of his performance in the IPL. And as history has witnessed, Raina is the only batsman to have scored more than 400 runs in every season of the IPL. The team will be dependent on him provide leadership to an otherwise established group of players, capable of taking out anyone on their days.
Existing Players: Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, James Faulkner, Brendon McCullum, Dwayne Bravo, Aaron Finch, Dwayne Smith, Dinesh Karthik, Dhawal Kulkarni, Praveen Kumar, Andrew Tye, Ishan Kishan, Pradeep Sangwan, Shivil Kaushik, Shadab Jakati, Jaydev Shah.
Players Bought: Nathu Singh (50 Lakh), Basil Thampy (85 Lakh), Tejas Singh Baroka (10 Lakhs), Manpreet Gony (60 Lakhs), Jason Roy (1 Cr), Munaf Patel (30 Lakh), Chirag Suri (10 Lakh), Shelly Shaurya (10 Lakh), Shubham Agrawal (10 Lakh), Pratham Singh (10 Lakh), AkshDeep Nath (10 Lakh)
In the 143 innings, he has batted so far, Raina has scored over 4000 runs at an impressive average of 33 and a strike rate of 138.54. Coming in at first down, Raina plays a very important part in deciding the pace of the innings. Rains will be batting after the explosive duo of Dwyane Smith and Brendon McCullum open the innings for the GL. The team will be heavily dependent on Raina to carry on that momentum and if the openers fail, Raina will have to be the player the team revolves around.
The former New Zealand captain will always ben remembered as the man who put the Indian Premier League on the map with a magnificent 158 on its very first day. Although, his performances, both internationally and in the IPl have been inconsistent but one can always depend on BMac to pull something out of the hat. On his day, he can run down any bowler in the lane, clear every boundary in the vicinity. The Gujarat Lions will be expected him to give a quick start and propel them to the stratosphere in the first 6 overs.
Jason Roy is Gujarat Lions’ biggest buy of the year. Although he would competing with Dwyane Smith to open the innings, it is highly likely that the Englishman is likely to get the nod. The 26 year bats with a strike rate of 144 and have developed a reputation for clean hitting and clearing boundaries at will, especially in the powerplay. God help the opponents of the day both BMac and Roy get going.
Jadeja is the ICC no 1 ranked test bowler in the world. He is probably in the best batting form of his international career. He makes a valuable addition to what is a predominantly a batting side. His all-round abilities, especially his left arm spin would be quite useful on Indian pitches which will turn come the summer season. Jadeja is also an excellent fielder and his batting down the order could make all the difference between a win and a loss.
