After surrendering in Dharamshala, India dominated Sri Lanka in the second ODI on Thursday afternoon. Asked to bat first, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma started cautiously for the hosts before launching an onslaught on the opposition. Dhawan departed after scoring a half-century while Rohit raced to a record-third ODI double century. India finished at 392 for the loss of four wickets after 50 overs, becoming the first team to register hundred 300-plus scores in the 50-over format. A total of 15 sixes were scored in the Indian innings, with 12 of them coming from skipper Rohit Sharma’s blade.
Leading the hosts in the absence of rested skipper Virat Kohli, Rohit laid waste to the Sri Lankan bowling with an unbeaten 208 off 153 deliveries. The 30-year-old Mumbai batsman had scored 264 against the same opponents in Kolkata in 2014 which is still the highest individual score in the 50-over format. He added 115 with fellow opener Shikhar Dhawan, who made 68, to build a solid base for India and then added 213 for the second with fellow Mumbai batsman Shreyas Iyer, who scored 88 in what was his second ODI.
It took Rohit 115 deliveries to score a century. He then tore into Sri Lanka’s bowlers and India scored 147 in their last 10 overs to brighten their hopes of squaring up the series at 1-1. In his 153-ball knock, Rohit smashed 13 fours and 12 sixes. Here is the list of all batsmen who have scored a double hundred in ODIs:
264 Rohit Sharma
237* M Guptill
219 V Sehwag
215 C Gayle
209 Rohit Sharma
201 Rohit Sharma *
200 S Tendulkar
This was also the second highest individual score by a captain in ODIs. The record is held by the former Indian opener Virender Sehwag who had scored 219 runs against West Indies in Indore in 2011. Back then, Sehwag was leading the Indian team in the absence of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. With this, Rohit Sharma has also registered the record of most sixes by an Indian in one calendar year. He has scored 41 sixes in 2017, going past Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of 40 in 1998.
