The recently concluded series between India and Australia was full of excitement, match-winning performances and of course, controversies. India emerged victorious 2-1 after four gripping Tests but there were certain moments that left a sour taste with the fans. From Steve Smith’s DRS row to Pune’s dead pitch, the fans had a lot to discuss during this series. Now, that we are done with the series, let’s have a look at all the controversial moments from the Border-Gavaskar Trophy:
1. Steve Smith’s Dressing Room Review
Australian captain Steve Smith was as disappointing with his conduct as impressive he was with the bat in this series. Things between the two sides became sour when Steve Smith was caught on camera seeking clues from the dressing room over a DRS call. He later described it as a ‘brain fade’ moment.
Here is the dressing room incident:
2. Virat Kohli’s post match comments
Indian skipper Virat Kohli didn’t shy from taking on his counterpart either making things worse. After the DRS incident, Kohli stopped short of calling Steve Smith ‘cheat’ and after the Dharamshala Test even said that Australian players are no more his friends.
Here is what Kohli said:
3. Ishant Sharma’s monkey face
Even though Ishant Sharma didn’t pick too many wickets in the series and was replaced by Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the final Test, he was fast, furious and full of aggression throughout the series. Ishant mimicked the Australian captain leaving everyone in splits. His reaction was so epic that even the commentators recreated the moment.

4. Steve Smith abusing Murali Vijay
The Australian captain was at it again when he was caught on camera abusing the Indian opener Murali Vijay when he claimed a catch in Dharamshala. However, Smith apologised for his behaviour after the game by saying, “At times I have been in my own bubble and have let my emotions slip. I apologise for that.”
When Umesh Yadav broke Glenn Maxwell’s bat into two:
5. Pune Pitch
How often do you see that a pitch instead of the players, is the talk of the town? That’s exactly what happened in Pune as Australia wrapped the game with ease bowling India out for 107 and 105 runs respectively. The pitch was rated poor by the match referee.
Umpire Gaffney trolled Australia:
6. Australian media playing 12th man
Australian media attacked the Indian players so much during this series that former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar was forced to call it an extension of their team management. During the series, Australian media compared Virat Kohli to Donald Trump and later labelled him as “classless” and “egomaniac” after his no-friends comments.
Wriddhiman Saha brought Steve Smith down:
7. Matthew Wade’s behind the stump comments
Australian wicketkeeper Matthew Wade led Australia sledging charge from the front. He was recorded on camera continuously telling Ravindra Jadeja something in Dharamshala but the Indian all-rounder replied with the bat scoring a brilliant half-century.
Watch what Ravindra Jadeja had to say about the incident:
8. James Sutherland’s furious remarks
In this series, things went beyond the playing field and even the cricketing boards got involved in the action. Cricket Australia CEO slammed Virat Kohli for questioning Steve Smith’s integrity and later said that the Indian captain doesn’t know how to spell sorry.
Ishant Sharma’s monkey face recreated:
9. Virat Kohli’s poor form
The kind of form Virat Kohli has been in over the last 12 months, even him not scoring runs is a kind of controversy in itself. The Indian captain scored only 46 runs from 5 innings of this series before getting injured in Ranchi. He didn’t feature in the Dharamshala Test and is now fighting to get fit for the IPL.

10. Steve Smith’s beer offer
After the loss in Dharamshala, Steve Smith did the most Aussie thing ever by asking Ajinkya Rahane for a beer. “I said (to Rahane) see you next week, he’s in my team for the IPL,” Smith told ABC Grandstand. “I asked if he wanted us to come in for a drink being at the end of the series. He said he’d get back to me. With Ajinkya, we get on well,” he added.
