Considered by many as England’s ‘smartest ever cricketer’, Zafar Ansari, who had made his cricketing debut in Dhaka, two weeks back, will be expectedly playing his first test in Rajkot starting Wednesday.

The 24-year old Pakistani origin all-rounder who had completed a double-first in politics and sociology from Cambridge University, had recently sumitted a 40,000 word thesis on ‘The origins of African-American armed self-defence and its relationship with the Black Power movement in the 1960s’. He is even the first alumni to play for England in 13 years.

Zafar’s father, Khizar Humayun Ansari, a professor of Islam and Cultural Diversity in the department of history at Royal Holloway is also a cricket fan and idolises Hanif Mohammad and Richie Benaud. Zafar’s mother is the head of the department of the same university where Ansari teaches.

Though according to Zafar, playing cricket came more out of circumstance than a chice by him and Ansari stated that the cricketing enhancement of his son came during his study at Cambridge.

Ansari told that being of Asian descent had never been a consideration to him during his career making period, though he is also well versed in the heritage and background his religion and used to visit Pakistan, once every year till 17-18. There are three Pakistani-origin spinners, including Zafar, in the England’s squad for the upcoming series in India.
