Deepika, in a span of 6 years, has come across as an actress par excellence. She has experimented with her roles that have further strengthened her acting ability. Here’s a look at Deepika Padukone’s top 10 roles we loved her in.
Om Shanti Om (2007): Deepika Padukone’s debut film Om Shanti Om showcased her as an actress who was jack of all traits and good at all. Deepika was mesmerising as Shanti Priya an actress of 70s. With her graceful dancing on songs like ‘Dhoom Taana’ and adept acting even as Sandy, her avatar in rebirth. Deepika indeed made a promising start in Bollywood in Farah Khan movie opposite Shah Rukh Khan.

Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008): The next year she featured in Siddharth Anand's ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ with her then beau Ranbir Kapoor. In the film, Deepika played a strong-willed, independent girl Gayatri, trying to make ends meet, who enthralls lover boy Ranbir in her own charming way.

Love Aaj Kal (2009): We also liked her somewhat similar role in Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Love Aaj Kal’ opposite Saif Ali Khan. In ‘Love Aaj Kal’, Deepika played the role of Meera, an ambitious girl, in love with Jai (Saif Ali Khan). While truly in love, she doesn’t wish to bind herself and when career beckons they have a mutual break-up, but decide to remain friends. Later she marries her boss whom she abandons on her honeymoon for Jai. We liked Deepika’s attitude and panache in the film.

Karthik Calling Karthik (2010): In Farhan Akhtar film, Deepika played a corporate woman Shonali Mukherjee, who learns to love and trust a schizophrenic Kartik played by Farhan Akhtar. In the film Deepika juggled well with the dichotomy of her character’s insistence on being strong and independent while simultaneously being vulnerable when in love.

Aarakshan (2011): In the Prakash Jha film based on quota system and education, Deepika played righteous Amitabh Bahchchan’s daughter Poorbi, who is her father’s strength all through his difficult times. Deepika nailed her performance with her girl next door looks and simplistic yet powerful screen presence before megastar Amitabh Bachchan.

Cocktail (2012): Cocktail became a game changer for Deepika Padukone as the film showcased her in a new light altogether. Here for the first time in her career Deepika took on a role that had shades of grey. In an interview to The Indian Express, Deepika said that her starring role in the 2012 Homi Adajania-directed romantic comedy Cocktail marked a significant turning point in her career. During the script narration, producer Dinesh Vijan offered Deepika the choice of which woman to play and she decided on Veronica to expand her horizons as an actress. Portraying the role was a creative and physical challenge for her, and to achieve the physical requirements of her character she exercised extensively and followed a rigorous diet. Critics were divided in their opinion of the film, but particularly praised Deepika's performance. The film earned Deepika Best Actress nominations at several award ceremonies, including Screen Awards.

Race 2 (2013): 2013 proved to be a prominent year for Deepika Padukone as she starred in four top grossing films of the year winning the title of Bollywood’s reigning queen. However what is also exceptional about these films is that Deepika played 4 completely diverse roles in the films too. First up Deepika took on a grey role in Abbas-Mustan’s thriller film ‘Race 2’, where, as Eleena she didn’t shy away from evening killing people for her benefit. Deepika was convincing and strong in her role as the shrewd business woman who sided with her brother’s enemy to get her share at the empire she helped build.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013): Next she came together with her now ex-boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor, as Naina the introvert girl next door who takes a spontaneous decision to go on a trip with a bunch of schoolmates she doesn’t relay know well. The trip changes her life almost completely as years later, Deepika is a new Naina who is lively and jovial and seizes the moment while simultaneously is cautious of her future. Again, Naina shows Bunny (Ranbir Kapoor) a new perspective of life and thereby claims her happily ever after!

Chennai Express (2013): The Shah Rukh Khan starrer, Rohit Shetty film showed Deepika in an absolutely new and fresh avatar. In thick south Indian accent, complete with gajra and kanjivaram saris, Deepika was at her comic best in ‘Chennai Express’. She won a zillion hearts as Menna-amma, daughter of a southern India don. Deepika’s command on the south Indian accent and her antic that supported her regional role was awe inspiring! And this is indeed, one of Deepika Padukone’s top notch performances.

Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013):From South India, Deepika Padukone swiftly journeyed to the western state of Gujarat in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Ram-Leela’. Deepika was scintillating as Gujarati ‘dikri’ Leela. Sanjay Leela Bhansali who is known to present his heroines in the most beautiful way, was no different with Deepika. Deepika’s garba skills too left the audience awestruck! Deepika played the role of a strong willed Leela madly in love with Ram played by her rumoured beau Ranveer Singh, who is the son of the head of her mother’s enemy. Her chemistry with Ranveer was one of the high points of the film. In the year ahead Deepika has three confirmed projects – Kochadaiiyaan (opposite Thalivaa Rajinikanth), Finding Fanny Fernandes (With Arjun Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia and Pankaj Kapur) and Happy New Year (With Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani and others). Each film looks as promising as the other. Looks like Deepika is in no mood to let herself slip from the top position just yet! We wish her luck.
