The proposed deployment of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system by the US in South Korea this year is one of the many points of conflict between America and China. The Asian giant considers THAAD deployment as a direct threat to its own security and believes it will increase tensions in the Korean peninsula. Notwithstanding Chinese concerns, US and South Korea claim that THAAD is intended to defend against any North Korean aggression. (AP)

Here we take a look at everything we need to know about THAAD and the controversy surrounding the anti-missile system. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system is one of the recent addition to the US’ anti-ballistic missile toolkit. US started THAAD production in 2008. It is designed to hit missiles as they dive towards the earth, not when they go up. (AP)

"According to The Diplomat, THAAD can “intercept and destroy short, medium, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles in their terminal phase.” It says that THAAD can intercept missiles coming from “endo and exo-atmospheric altitudes”. It can engage with incoming missiles at the maximum altitude of 93 miles above the surface of the Earth. Moreover, the THAAD missile can travel at the supersonic speed above Mach 8. (Reuters)

Both US and South Korea feel threatened with North Korea’s nuclear programme. The threat perception increased after North Korea carried out two nuclear tests and over 20 missile tests last year. North Korea openly defied UN resolutions and sanctions. Moreover, North Korea regularly threatens to attack S Korea and the US, According to a Reuters report, North Korea appears to have restarted operation of a reactor at its main Yongbyon nuclear facility that produces plutonium that can be used for its nuclear weapons programme. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Wednesday said, “North Korea continues to launch missiles, develop its nuclear weapons programme and engage in threatening rhetoric and behaviour.” He warned that “any attack on the United States, or our allies, will be defeated, and any use of nuclear weapons would be met with a response that would be effective and overwhelming”. Though the deployment of THAAD will not directly threaten China’s own missile programme, but the Asian country fears it would strengthen USA’s position in the region. (AP)

US-China relations are already tensed under Trump administration over the South China Sea controversy. THAAD will raise the possible military confrontation between the countries further. With THAAD in South Korea, US would not only secure itself against North Korean threats but also position itself against any Chinese aggression in future. (AP)
