    In historic feat, an all-woman team of the Navy on Sunday embarked on a journey to circumnavigate the globe for the first time ever by an Indian crew. Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who flagged off the journey, called it a "historic" day for the country. The first such expedition by the Indian Navy, 'Navika Sagar Parikrama', was flagged off after a ceremony at the INS Mandovi Boat Pool near Goa, PTI reports. The historic tour will see six-member women crew circumnavigate the globe on an India-built sail boat, INSV Tarini, which is being skippered by Lt Commander Vartika Joshi. Expressing her satisfaction, Defence Minister Sitharaman said, "This is not an occasion which happens once in five years or once in 10 years. It's a historic day for India and its navigation history. Globally, I think our women stand out for doing something which most navies haven't even thought of." (PTI)

    Hailing the initiative as ambitious and arduous, Sitharaman said, "It is an opportunity that no one easily gets to be amongst these inspired and motivated women. I appreciate the Navy for the initiative. I appreciate all the mentors who have been instrumental in inspiring, motivating and training these fascinating women." (PTI)

    The event also saw the presence of Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba on the occasion. Sitharaman termed her predecessor Parrikar as an "inspiring political mentor". (PTI)

    Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also met the crew and had extended his best wishes for the mission. "Met 6 bright officers of the Indian Navy who are going to circumnavigate the globe on the sailing vessel, INSV Tarini," PM Narendra Modi had Tweeted. " "Met Lt Cdr Vartika Joshi. Hailing from Uttarakhand, she has rich sailing experience and has led INSV Mhadei as well as INSV Tarini," Modi had said. The Prime Minister also interacted with Lt Cdr Pratibha Jamwal, who belongs to Himachal. Modi said Jamwal sailed from Goa to Port Blair, Goa to Mauritius, Goa to Cape Town. (PTI)
