  • Days after Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was jailed for 20 years for raping sadhvis, Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad has out with a list of ‘fake’ babas. According to news agency ANI, the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad has released names of ‘fake’ babas and spiritual leaders. Also, the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad has decided to put in place a mechanism to award the title of ‘sant’ to stop its misuse by people like Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, news agency PTI reports. “The Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad feels that the title of ‘sant’ is being misused so it has decided to put in place a mechanism to award this title,” Jain said. The title will be given after evaluating and examining an individual. Here is the full list the fake babas:

  • Asaram Bapu: Also known as 'Bapuji' by his followers, Asaram Bapu is accused of allegedly raping a minor girl in 2013, reported India Today. Meanwhile, following the Delhi gang-rape in December 2012, the godman sparked controversy with his comments blaming another rape victim for the ordeal, added report. (ANI)

  • Swami Om: Earlier on August 9, self-proclaimed godman Swami Om was arrested by a team of Delhi Police on Wednesday in connection with a 2008 case. He was picked up from his residence in Bhajapura by the Inter State Cell unit of Crime Branch. He was earlier declared as a proclaimed offender by a Delhi court. Last year, the court issued non-bailable warrant against Swami Om for allegedly breaking and entering a cycle shop owned by his brother Pramod Jha. He was accused of stealing 11 bicycles, a few spare parts and the sale deed of Jha’s house. The controversial godman rose to fame for his appearance in Bigg Boss season 10. (IE)

  • Gurmeet Ram Rahim: Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, 50, is the head of spiritual sect Dera Sacha Sauda, which was established by Mastan Balochistani, on April 29, 1948. The headquarter of the sect is located in Sirsa district of Haryana and has over 46 ashrams spread all across the country. But Ram Rahim is not an ordinary godman. In his Twitter profile, he describes himself as “Spiritual Saint/Philanthropist/Versatile Singer/Allrounder Sportsperson/Film Director/Actor/Art Director/Music Director/ Writer/Lyricist/Autobiographer/DOP”. He has worked as actor, director, music composer and writer on several films including highly successful “MSG: The Messenger trilogy”. The self-proclaimed god man was arrested earlier in August in a rape case of two sadhvis. He is currently serving 20 years of jail sentence. (PTI)

  • Radhe Maa: Godmen was in the news just days after Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was sent to jail for rape of two sadhvis. The reason why self-styled and quite controversial god-woman Radhe Maa was in the news is that Punjab and Haryana High Court had directed Punjab Police to file FIR against her on September 6. According to a report by ANI, the direction from the HC came on a plea of a Phagwara resident, Surender Mittal who is also a former Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) member. Mittal accused Radhe Maa of seducing him through various means and later cursed him as well, reported ANI. (Webiste)

  • Nirmal Baba: The Allahabad High Court had directed the Information and Broadcasting ministry earlier in May 2017, to look into allegations that TV programmes relating to godman Nirmal Baba were spreading superstition and take action against the erring channels if the charges are found true. A bench of justice A P Sahi and justice Sanjai Harkauli passed the order on a PIL moved in 2012 by a local lawyer K.Saran. The petitioner had sought action against the TV channels broadcasting the programmes of Nirmal Baba under the rule 6 of the Cable Television Network Rules 1994. The petitioner had alleged that the programmes were encouraging superstition and blind faith. The petitioner had pleaded that the provisions of relevant law and Rules 1994 specifically provide that if such channels do not desist from showing contents with superstition and blind faith, the government may revoke the permission granted for running the channel.(PTI)

  • Apart from these the list also includes Sachdarangi, Ichachadhari Vishwanand, Swami Asmianand, Om Namah Shivaay, Narayan Sai Rampal.
