A formidable Indian cricket team is expected to dominate the visiting New Zealand by revelling in home conditions in its historic 500th Test match, which will herald the beginning of a long 13-match home season, here from tomorrow. There is an extra bit of statistics and history attached with the match for it being the team's 500th Test match since it started playing the game 80 years back. The team played its first ever Test when it was a British colony in 1932 but over the years, has established itself as a force in world cricket. The Indian team has always been an intimidating side on spin-friendly tracks under sultry conditions and the script is unlikely to change unless the Kiwis master the conditions.

The government today agreed to partly fund a Rs 13,000 crore natural gas pipeline project that will take the fuel to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency and the eastern part of the country. The government will provide Rs 5,176 crore or about 40 per cent of the project cost after state-owned gas utility found it difficult to commercially justify the huge investment of Rs12,940 crore in absence of either a firm source of gas supply or customers. The 2,539-km long pipeline from Jagdishpur in Uttar Pradesh to Haldia in West Bengal and also Bokaro in Jharkhand and Dhamra in Odisha will be completed by 2020. (PTI)

A day after conducting its perfect trials, India today again successfully test-fired a new long range surface-to-air missile (LRSAM), developed jointly with Israel to strengthen its air defence capability, from a base off Odisha coast. The sophisticated LRSAM was test fired from the launch pad 3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur near here at about 2 PM today, defence sources said. Terming the test mission as "successful", a Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) official said today's trial was on a different altitude and range compared to the test launch of the missile yesterday.
