    Telecom tale: India's mobile user base grew marginally to 1,035.12 million (103.5 crore) at the end of June this year, with state-run telecom firm BSNL regaining a spot among the top 5 players.With this, overall tele-density in India increased to 83.20 from 83.14 at the end of May, TRAI said in its monthly report for June, 2016.     Bad Loans: The pace of bad loan formation is going to slower resulting in a stable outlook for the Indian banking sector over the next 12-18 months, Moody's Investors Service said.     Drugs price slash: Government has slashed prices of 10 more drugs while bringing eight new medicines, including paracetamol, under price control for the first time in its bid to cap cost of over 800 plus formulations to make them affordable. Drug price regulator NPPA has reduced the prices of ten drugs, including of anti-coagulant enoxaparin and anti- epilepsy drug carbamazepine, in the range of 4.8 per cent to a tad over 23.3 per cent. On the other hand, medicines like paracetamol and antibiotics like cefadroxil and cefazolin have been brought under the price control ambit for the first time. (PTI)

    Economic freedom has been increasing around the world during the last 30 years according to the Fraser Institute's Economic Freedom of the World 2016 Annual Report. The report notes that the top-ten countries are Hong Kong and Singapore, that once again, occupy the top two positions. The other nations in the top 10 are New Zealand, Switzerland, Canada, Georgia, Ireland, Mauritius, the United Arab Emirates, and Australia and the United Kingdom, tied for 10th. The researchers report the rankings of some other major countries: the United States (16th), Germany (30th), Japan (40th), South Korea (42nd), France (57th), Italy (69th), Mexico (88th), Russia (102nd), India (112th), China (113th) and Brazil (124th).     Gold imports fell by 77.45 per cent to USD 1.11 billion in August due to sliding prices of the metal in both global and domestic markets. According to the data of the commerce ministry, gold imports had stood at USD 4.95 billion in August last year. The imports of the metal have been declining since February this year. Dip in the imports help contain the current account deficit (CAD). (PTI)

    With some crops like pulses starting to arrive in mandis a bit early, the government said minimum support price (MSP) of all kharif crops grown this year will be applicable from September. Normally, harvesting of kharif (summer) crops begins from October. But this year, kharif pulses, especially moong, have started hitting the market in September itself and the government has started its procurement at MSP as mandi prices have gone below the support price.     SBI Chairperson Arundhati Bhattacharya said SBI merger with its subsidiaries is essential in the wake of tough competition from Non Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs). "The merger is essential, because today banking is evolving at very fast rate. You face competition from not only other banks, but also from NBFCs. In order to sustain profitable growth, it is important for us to consolidate, because small organisations do not have such strength or capital," she added. (PTI)

    Equity mutual funds added over 11 lakh investor accounts or folios in the first five months of the current fiscal, mainly due to strong participation from retail investors. This is on top of an addition of 43 lakh folios in 2015-16 and 25 lakh in 2014-15. In the past two years, investor accounts increased mainly due to robust contribution from smaller towns. (PTI)

    Urea imports: Countrys urea import declined by 3.41 per cent to 84.74 lakh tonnes in financial year 2015-16 due to higher domestic production. The country had imported 87.49 lakh tonnes of urea in the 2014-15 period, according to the official data. The domestic production of urea was high throughout the year (2015-16). As a result, there has been decline in import (PTI)
